The thesis analyses the portrayal of the working class in two texts: A Man's Place by Annie Ernaux and Returning to Reims by Didier Eribon. Both texts draw heavily on the thought of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and the thesis thus summarises concepts central to the interpretation of the selected works. Given its position at the intersection of literature and sociology, one chapter is devoted to the question of genre as an indicator of the possible modes of reading. Both texts aim to describe a collective, a social class, but Eribon and Ernaux each choose a radically different literary strategy.
